Elder Abuse: A Frontline Issue
Older people often have the most contact with frontline workers, whether through community services, health care, local government, neighbourhood centres or other support services. That means frontline staff are uniquely placed to notice the early signs of abuse, respond appropriately and connect people with the right support.
With Australia’s ageing population, preventing and responding to elder abuse has become an increasing priority for governments. The Australian Government has recently released the National Elder Abuse Action Plan 2024–2034, setting out a coordinated national approach to prevention, awareness, response and research. In NSW, the Government is also developing a new strategy to strengthen the state’s response to elder abuse.
Whether you work directly with older people or support them as part of your broader role, understanding elder abuse and knowing where to seek advice can make a significant difference.

There are a number of excellent resources available to help frontline professionals recognise, respond to and prevent elder abuse.
- Compass is Australia’s national website on elder abuse, developed by Elder Abuse Action Australia. It provides practical information on recognising the different forms of abuse, having difficult conversations, responding safely, legal and financial information, and free online learning modules designed specifically for frontline workers. - The NSW Ageing and Disability Commission leads the state’s response to the abuse, neglect and exploitation of older people and adults with disability.
