How to spot and tackle Financial Elder Abuse

To mark World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, we invited the NSW Ageing and Disability Commissioner, Jeff Smith, to talk about the rise of financial elder abuse and what can be done to stop it.

He explains what this growing form of abuse is, how to recognise the signs, how older people can best protect themselves, and why it’s always important to get independent legal advice when making decisions about your finances.

Importantly, help is available. For information and advice on elder abuse in the home or community, you can call the Ageing and Disability Commission Helpline on 1800 628 221 (9am to 4pm) or email helpline@adc.nsw.gov.au.
