The Senior – How 62-year-old Mary beat her joint pain and fear by flying high
First published by The Senior.
Mary Wyer from Sydney’s 50 Up Circus shared her story of taking on a new challenge and finding joy in later life in support of the release of a new report from the Council on the Ageing NSW.
[The new report] found ageing was often reduced to a period of “decline and loss”, ignoring the rich experiences and joy people often find as they get older.
Gohar Yazdabadi, chief executive of COTA NSW said their new report, Golden Eras: The Joy of Ageing in New South Wales, shows mainstream news headlines often fail to highlight the joy and freedom many feel later in life.
“Growing older can bring greater perspective, confidence and freedom,” Yazdabadi said.
“It can mean having more time to pursue the things that matter, stronger relationships, new interests and the opportunity to contribute to our communities.”
Renewing the public’s view of ageing can benefit everyone, the report argues, particularly as projections on the ageing population show that up to a quarter of NSW residents will be over 65 by 2050.
“We are all ageing, and we need to build a society where people can look forward to later life rather than fear it,” Yazdabadi said.
