As you get older, it’s important to ensure that your wishes for the future are met. You can do this by putting certain legal arrangements in place, including a Will, an Enduring Power of Attorney and an Enduring Guardianship.
However, you need to make these arrangements while you are still well, because you will no longer be able to do so if you lose capacity. This can create many problems for both you and your family or other concerned people.
COTA NSW’s Legal Pathways service can guide you in your consideration of these issues and provide a pathway to legal assistance.
Eligible people can have a free consultation with a private solicitor to draw up the required documents at a cost of $50 per document. You are generally eligible if you receive an age pension or hold a Commonwealth Seniors Health Card, but there are also some limitations on the complexity of matters that can be dealt with under the program.
Legal Pathways is funded by the NSW Department of Communities and Justice, under the NSW Ageing Strategy.
We have private solicitors available throughout metropolitan Sydney and in some regional areas in NSW. If we don’t have a solicitor available in your area, we will try to direct you to another service.
“Thank you for putting us in contact with [solicitor]’s legal team. We have been there today and they were absolutely wonderful and treated my mum and I both with the utmost respect and dignity. I just wanted to thank you very much for helping us out.”
Legal Pathways is a phone service. For more information, please call Judith on 02 8268 9616 (Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday). If the phone is not answered, please leave a message and we will call you back.
