Paying the Price: Women, Work and Care
On Tuesday 27 May 2014, COTA NSW held a Parliamentary Forum to explore the financial challenges that women face as they age.
Over their lifetimes, women often spend considerable periods out of the workforce as unpaid carers. As a result, women approaching retirement often have less superannuation accrued and lower levels of savings than their male peers.
This, coupled with changing patterns of home-ownership, means that increasing numbers of women – including those who are currently middle-income earners – risk homelessness once they retire.
Paying the Price sought to prompt debate about the measures that should be adopted to ensure Australian women enjoy a more secure older age.
