Over the past four years COTA NSW has had the pleasure of coordinating NSW Grandparents Day and ensuring that communities across the state come together to celebrate the role that grandparents play in our lives.
Each year we have seen more and more people in communities across NSW come together to celebrate grandparents – be it by nominating someone in their local area for a Grandparent of the Year Award, organising a NSW Grandparents Day event in their neighbourhood or sharing with people across the state their memories of spending time with their grandparents.
What started as a single day’s celebration at Taronga Zoo in 2011 has been expanded to a celebration that includes more than 160 NSW Grandparents Day events across the state last year alone. Each year we have been able to get the message of NSW Grandparents Day out in headlines from local newspapers up to prime-time TV, all recognising the enormous contributions that grandparents as providers of care and love to their children and grandchildren and as custodians of individual and cultural memories.
COTA NSW is proud to have helped bring NSW Grandparents Day to where it is today and to have to aided community groups across the state to build up grassroots support for grandparents.
