Consumer representatives sit on consultative committees and councils to make sure older people have a voice.
COTA NSW volunteers have represented older people with Ausgrid, the Greater Sydney Commission, Standards Australia and the NSW Aged Care Roundtable.
Different committees have different levels of commitment. They usually meet once per quarter (although there is some variation), and most are currently meeting online.
Consumer representatives connect with staff at COTA NSW to ensure they know what the community is telling us. They also report back on what the organisation they work with is doing to support older people.
You don’t need expertise in the subject matter to be a consumer representative. What you do need is a passion about the wellbeing of older people, particularly those who can’t speak up for themselves. You’ll also have the benefit of training and support from COTA NSW.
