NSW Peer Education Centre

The COTA NSW Peer Education Centre provides informative and interactive sessions to groups throughout New South Wales on a variety of health and wellbeing issues affecting people over 50.

About Peer Education

Peer Education is the process of people who share common ground teaching and learning from one another. COTA NSW Seniors Peer Education Centre trains older people to talk to other older people about healthy ageing issues.

About the Sessions

  • Sessions are free of charge
  • Sessions are run by fully trained volunteer Peer Educators.
  • Most sessions are available throughout NSW.
  • Sessions have a practical focus including discussion of simple strategies to deal with the issues raised
  • Sessions are designed to be interactive - attendees are encouraged to share their own ideas and experiences.
  • Sessions run for approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour

The COTA NSW Peer Education Centre has Peer Educators trained in a variety of topics:

  • Energy Efficiency - The Power to Change-In partnership with EnergyAustralia This session focuses on reasons to reduce consumption of electricity with knowledge of simple and practical steps that can be taken. Listen to tips on simple low cost/no cost ways with energy saving facts. This session is available in the Energy Australia service areas.
  •  beyondmaturityblues - a joint project with beyondblue: the national depression initiative and COTA. Raising awareness and promoting understanding of depression in older Australians. The focus of the session is on learning about depression – its symptoms and treatments, methods of prevention, how to support someone living with depression, and what you can do to enjoy better health. These sessions are also available in Italian, Greek, Vietnamese and Chinese.
  • Medicines and you - New informative medicine sessions to assist seniors in becoming more active in managing their medicines for a healthy lifestyle.
