We would like to thank all of you who have signed our ‘Hands off the Pension’ petition. It seems your voice has been heard. We are pleased to learn that the Federal government is dropping plans to change pension indexation.

COTA has been campaigning long and hard against this change, which would have seen the significant  and continuing cuts to the pension.

We are supportive of the Federal government’s announcement about changes to the assessment of assets in determining eligibility for all Government pensions. We are especially pleased that  it seems no older person on the full pension will be worse off.”

Despite this good news, COTA is still calling for a wide ranging inquiry into the Australia’s retirement income system. “It’s critical that we take a big-picture approach to this issue,” says CEO of COTA NSW Ian Day. “We need an independent, comprehensive review of retirement income, which looks at the pension, superannuation, tax, mature age employment policy, aged care costs and other issues.”

More analysis of the Government’s announcement can be found here.
