Long-time COTA NSW staffer and leading proponent of Universal Design, Dr Jane Bringolf, recently participated in a North Coast Housing Forum. Convened by the NSW Government’s department of Family and Community Services (FACS), the forum explored some of the knottiest issues facing our community.
“The forum tackled a raft of issues,” said Dr Bringolf. “Speakers addressed the need for housing options to expand as the population ages. There were some great presentations that dispelled myths about older people’s housing preferences, as well as discussion of the kinds of innovations in accessible and adaptable housing we need to see to allow older people to age well.”
The forum included a presentation by the Hon John Ajaka, Minister for Ageing, as well as Jenny Dowell, Mayor of Lismore City Council, and Professor Bruce Judd, University of New South Wales, among others.
During forum discussions, Mayor Dowell noted that one of the most pressing issues faced by older people is the lack of access to information about their housing choices. She suggested that a guide be developed and that a service be set up within Service NSW.
“This suggestion was well received by the audience, and Minister Ajaka affirmed it was a good idea” said Dr Bringolf, noting that she was able to point out that “COTA NSW provides information about many of these issues on our website.”
